Burning smell diverts Canadian jet to Nadi International Airport
An Air Canada AC/ACA 34 Boeing 777 carrying 265 passengers and 18 crew diverted to Nadi last night for an emergency landing.
It came after crew noticed a burning smell and what one unconfirmed report said was believed to be smoke.
The big jet was enroute from Sydney to Vancouver.
Airports Fiji Limited and Air Terminal Services swung into action to provide full support.
Airports Fiji general manager Lawrence Liew said the emergency landing followed a burning smell emitting from a cabin toilet area.
“This later spread to another toilet which led to the pilots’ decision to divert,” he said.
“The emergency occurrence committee was not activated as the aircraft landed safely and was escorted to gate one by fire rescue trucks,” Mr Liew said.
He said that he had spoken to the crew and the passengers and crew were safe and comfortable.
Ground engineers were checking the plane, he said.
Nadi International Airport this evening,the ground engineers were still working on the aircraft.
Mr Liew said he was not in a position to say by when it would be ready to continue its flight to Vancouver.
Passengers disembarked and went to the transit lounge and a business class lounge.
Mr Liew said: “By 2100 hours all passengers have disembarked from the plane including three wheelchair cases who are now seated at the cafe and are cared for by ATS.
“Refreshments are being provided while hotel arrangements are being addressed as it would appear that the source of the burning smell has not been identified.
“Meanwhile the crew flight time limitation is fast approaching.
“Westin, Hilton and Tanoa hotels are being advised to standby.”
